U.S. Court Hears Mefloquine Case

Mefloquine-related litigation continues in many jurisdictions, including in the U.S, Canada, and Ireland. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently heard arguments from plaintiffs in the matter of Caston, et al. v. Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc., et al.

U.K. Ministry of Defence Settles Mefloquine Claims

As first hinted in 2024, after nine years of litigation, the U.K. MOD has reached a settlement with hundreds of service member plaintiffs who alleged severe adverse effects from their use of mefloquine. Hilary Meredith-Beckham, chair of law firm Hilary Meredith Solicitor, who led the action on behalf of the plaintiffs, was quoted as saying, “After a 9-year legal battle and some very dark moments along the way, I am delighted to confirm that this landmark legal action has now settled out of court.

Although the precise terms of the settlement are subject to a gag order, the reported total settlement is £20 million, or approximately $27 million. If true, this amount rivals what the U.K. MOD reportedly paid in litigation expenses over only a single year during the nine-year legal defense.

U.K. Mefloquine Veteran Completes 420-Mile Fundraising Walk

U.K. author and mefloquine veteran Andrew Marriott recently completed a 420-mile walk from Scotland to the Cenotaph in London’s Whitehall, in memory of armed forces and veteran suicides, especially those caused by mefloquine. Donations are still being accepted and will support The National Memorial Arboretum, the UK’s year-round center of Remembrance.Andrew Marriott is the author of ‘If You Wake at Midnight: The Lariam Wonder Drug Scandal,‘ a memoir of his experiences exposing the dangers of the drug. Dr. David Healy, of RxISK, describes it as a compelling read:

“If You Wake is not just about Lariam and the problems it causes, it’s about the bureaucrats, FDA, EMA, MHRA and others who have blocked recognition of these problems, when recognition could have saved lives.  Bureaucrats who have been perfidious in the way they have treated the families left behind or destroyed in the wake of Lariam induced problems who came to them looking for answers – thinking the regulators of medicines were an obvious first port of call.”
